Zostrix®
Zostrix is a topical analgesic cream made from purified pharmacological capsaicin, a natural substance from chilli peppers. Zostrix is an effective topical treatment for the pain associated with arthritis, post-herpetic neuralgia (pain following shingles, but not active shingles) and diabetic neuropathy.
Capsaicin works with the body's chemistry to lower levels of Substance P, the principal neurotransmitter of pain. When Substance P is reduced, so is the pain. By using Zostrix regularly, capsaicin builds up, Substance P depletes, and so does the pain. By depleting Substance P the pain decreases gradually, which achieves full effect over a period of time.
